b-activists: The passing of an immigrant rights advocate, Senator Edward Kennedy

Breakthrough is very sad at the passing of Senator Edward Kennedy. As a new staff person at Breakthrough three years ago, I was sent down to D.C. to cover an immigrant rights rally on the hill. Ted Kennedy was the guest speaker that day. I was extremely excited to see him in person for the first time and the excitement of the audience showed they felt the same. He gave the movement hope and from him we saw a great potential for change.
As they say, he was the “people’s Senator” and from the reaction that day from the thousands that showed up to hear him speak, he made the people proud.

US Senator Ted Kennedy, a lion of the American left and the last of the brothers who dominated US politics for years, has died of brain cancer, his family said. He was 77.
Edward M Kennedy was a towering, controversial figure whose death late on Tuesday night at his home in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, ended an era when his family appeared born to rule.
“We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,” his family said in a statement.
”We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness and opportunity for all.
”He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it.”
The ”liberal lion” of the Senate was the youngest of the Kennedy brothers.
President John F Kennedy was assassinated in 1963.
Senator Robert Kennedy was shot dead as he campaigned for the 1968 Democratic presidential nomination.
Joe Kennedy, a pilot, died in World War II.
