b-activists: This V-Day Eve Ensler inspires young women to embrace their emotional creature
Last week, there was a fierce performance reading of Eve Ensler’s newest work: I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World (published by Random House, February 9, 2010).
Students in New York City read and performed monologues inspired by the stories of girls from around the globe – stories of peer pressure in suburban high schools, anorexia, and unexpected pregnancy, the story of a Masai girl in Kenya unwilling to endure female genital mutilation, and a Chinese factory worker making Barbies. The young women featured in this benefit performance portrayed these stories with depth that conveyed emotion, strength, complexity, intelligence, compassion, creativity and intensity.
A powerful and moving portrayal and celebration of girls, I Am an Emotional Creature is supported by a corresponding targeted pilot V-Girls program that is engaging young women in an “empowerment philanthropy” model, supporting activism and giving girls a voice. This project follows Ensler’s groundbreaking global phenomenon “The Vagina Monologues,” which was first performed in 1996 and led to the introduction of V-Day.org – a global movement to end violence against women and girls. Ensler – the founder of V-Day.org – uses writing, performing, and storytelling to empower inspire girls everywhere to take agency over themselves – their hearts and minds and bodies.
She is also inspiring all of us – men and women – to find the ‘girl-cell’, to speak up, take action, and celebrate the ‘emotional creature’ within us all. In November, at TED India, Eve Ensler’s talk: Embrace Your Inner Girl was about the ‘girl-cell’ and the inspiration behind I Am an Emotional Creature: The Secret Life of Girls Around the World.
V-Season happens each year from February 1 through April 30 – to raise awareness about violence against women and girls. In 2010, thousands of events will take place throughout the country and throughout the world you can find more information about attending or hosting a V-Day event at http://events.vday.org/
