blast from the past: MTV resurrects HIV+ activist Pedro Zamora
To kick-off STD Awareness Month, MTV resurrected the life of former Real World star & HIV rights activist Pedro Zamora in a new biopic that aired on April Fool’s Day.
Though the film mashup, written by recent Oscar-winner Dustin Lance Black, is slow moving, surprisingly plastic (and slightly painful to those that watched the show way-back-when), 15 years after his death, this indelible pop-cultural icon (now played by Alex Loynaz) still carries the capacity to educate a new generation of MTV viewers by putting an affecting, but stern face on the AIDS epidemic.
In addition, Planned Parenthood created educational materials to be used when you’re watching Pedro on the air or from the download.
