Breakthrough’s very own Mallika Dutt was honored in Verve Magazine, India’s premier women’s international magazine, as one of India’s 50 most influential women. The mag spoke to Dutt about our Bell Bajao (Ring the Bell) campaign against domestic violence that, through TV and other media, shows people knocking on doors when they hear a domestic quarrel.

In India, the campaign has been so successful and influential that people have allegedly gone to neighbors houses and knocked on doors after hearing suspected domestic violence.

“To improve women’s rights, media campaigns have to be organized at the community level” she says. And that is exactly Breakthrough’s goal. She is proud of the fact that her campaign has reached people all over the country and states that her driving philosophy is “Human rights begin at home.”

Dutt is a human rights advocate as well as the founder of Breakthrough, which addresses human rights issues in the U.S. and India such as immigrant’s rights, HIV/AIDS, and violence against women.

Congrads Mallika!
